Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, depicts the lives of the Younger family, an African American family living in the Southside of Chicago during the 1950s. The play takes place in their cramped apartment offering the reader insight into the arguments, discussions, and conversations that take place between the characters. In one scene, Hansberry specifically offers the reader a conversation between Asagai, an influential companion, and Beneatha to show us how disparate the Younger siblings, Beneatha and Walter, are. As Asagai looks at Beneatha, he sees â€Å"what the New World has finally wrought.† Similarly, Beneatha takes a look at Walter and says, â€Å"Yes, just look at what the New World hath finally wrought† with an enraged†¦show more content†¦Many of them being people attempting to discourage her. An impediment Beneatha faces is when Walter nastily says, â€Å" Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bou t messing ‘round with sick people – then go be a nurse like other women – or just get married and be quiet†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (1.1.38). He believes she needs to conform with the stereotypes that are common among women. However, these hindrances intensify her ambition and motivate her to become one. She is doing this to break the racial stereotypes as well as gender stereotypes that are put upon her. Mama and Ruth tell Beneatha they want her to marry George Murchison because of his family s line of wealth. Beneatha confidently replies â€Å"Listen, I’m going to be a doctor. I’m not worried about who I’m going to marry yet – if I ever get married† She breaks the stereotype that she needs a man in order to get through life. Beneatha wants to be able to provide for herself and wants them to know she does not need a man. Beneatha’s ambition is a result of the positive effect the world has had on her. Beneatha is shaped into a confident African American woman by the end of the play. In the beginning of the play, Beneatha has a difficult time identifying herself, but after her college friend, Asagai, returns, she gains knowledge and gets a sense of who she is. Asagai pays her a visit in her home. He begins familiarizing Beneatha with the African heritage. Kazakhstan has been able sustain itself as a growing nation but it still relies heavily on Russia’s pipeline network for exporting much of its oil and natural gas. If the country is able to produce 3 million barrels per day, Kazakhstan will put itself as one of the worlds top 10 oil producing nations in the world. Kazakhstan has outlined a strategy for long-term domestic political stability and consolidation of their society. One of the top goals, which is, â€Å"to guarantee developing our own uniform civic motivation based on equality of opportunities for all the citizens of our country,† represents Kazakhstan strong belief in change for their country. The United States has shown its support to Central Asia; to countries like Georgia and Kazakhstan’s in their mutual goals to transform the state into a democratic nation. This transformation will be beneficial to the United States because it will bridge the lines of communication, by allowing for greater flexibility in areas dealing with oil, gas, and energy. With the help from the United States, President Nazarbayev has shared a vision of expansion and opportunities that extend beyond the boarders of Kazakhstan. Central Asian countries share the same vision of stability, prosperity, and democratic reform. As the people realize the growth potential of their country it has been a relatively easy battle for the government to conform the people to change. The reforms of the pension program, expansion of educational opportunities, reforms in the banking industry, all of these changes have and will continuously improve the livelihood of the citizens of the country. In a joint statement by the United States and Kazakhstan, â€Å"We will expand our joint activities to ensure the development of energy resources, while supporting economic diversification and reform, market principles, and the development of small and medium size enterprises. We recognize that peaceful democratization invests citizens in the future of their nation. Developing democratic institutions is therefore the crucial condition of long-term stability.† (Joint 1). Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan’s President has performed exceedingly well as the leader by implementing social, political, and economic reforms. It is completely evident that his goal is to provide economic stability in his country while being an example for Russia and other neighboring countries. GDP has risen, poverty is down, privatization reforms, and democracy on the horizon. Kazakhstan has broaden its export of oil and energy potential to countries like China and the United States, â€Å"it also joined the U.S.-sponsored Bu-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline that breaks Russia’s long-standing monopoly on delivering Caspian Sea oil to world markets. (Hill 3) Money is power; Kazakhstan has put itself in a powerful financial position through its energy and oil sector. â€Å"The Growth Competitiveness Index Rankings report ranks Kazakhstan as the most competitive of the post-Soviet states.† The country’s oil wealth has sprung vast investment opportunities across Central Asia. With plans on becoming part of the group of 10 leading exporters within a decade, Kazakhstan will need to expand the development of the country’s energy infrastructure to meet growing oil shipments to world markets. Kazakhstan’s surging economy continues to maintain economic growth and stability. However, while oil continues to be the biggest economic engine for Kazakhstan as it exports 80% of its oil, any drop in oil production will pose the biggest threat to the Kazakhstan economy. Exports could represent slow demand for the international community when there is fluctuating prices, lack of investments, and disagreements among neighboring nations regarding regional affairs. Although Russia is no longer a leading nation in this region it still has a lot of influence on Kazakhstan due to the pipeline control.   Kazakhstan relies on Russia’s pipeline to export its oil. Kazakhstan has a substantial investment in Georgia in its oil and gas sector. Currently Georgia and Russia are experiencing confrontation due to the Russian military occupancy in Georgia, this is putting Kazakhstan in the middle. This confrontation could hurt Kazakhstan’s oil exports as well as its ties with Georgia and the United States. Kazakhstan’s accession to the Baku-Tbilis-Ceyhan pipline is a bilateral move away from a heavy reliance Russia’s pipeline. A Colored Revolution in Kazakhstan has been a concern that analyst have identified since its independence in 1991. Kazakhstan has a large Slavic Population in the northern and eastern steppe regions. The Slavic population wants to obtain dual citizenship with Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as an establishment of the Russian language as recognized second state language. It would be to the best interest of the Kazakhstan government to develop a cohesive national identity for both Russians and Kazakh’s alike. Still Nazarbayev â€Å"designated Russian the language of inter-ethnic communication, and has ensured non-ethnic Kazakhs still occupy significant posts in the government.† (Hill 5) This is an important step for the country as it represents a social and cultural step toward democracy. â€Å"Every day public servants must have the awareness of the strategic goals and priorities, and settle them without wasting their time in meddling with minor, daily chores.† (Pr osperity) Kazakhstan has implemented an excellent idea to improve the education and skill of its young people to secure strength and profitability in the future. They have adopted an education reform that will send the brightest and best students from all over the country to study abroad. The students are then brought back home and placed in the Kazakhstan government, thereby diversifying the production of ideas that will be able to combat world issues. â€Å"In addition, Kazakhstan under Nazarbayev has not just sent its young people to study abroad, but has also launched a global quest for ideas on reform and modernization, as well as trying to learn from its own past mistakes.† (Hill 4) As the relationship between the United States and Kazakhstan grows the ideas and progress that they produce together becomes an example for other Central Asian countries. Kazakhstan is an active player in the fight against international terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It even â€Å"rid itself of the weapons in cooperation with the Unites States under the Nunn-Lugar program.† (Central 1). They’ve sealed nuclear testing tunnels, transported enriched uranium to the United States, and have become a proud member in the fight against terrorism. It has even vowed to help Afghanistan in its fight against terrorism and narcotics. The United States and Kazakhstan share a similar vision to an end to terrorism and corruption. The United States has enumerated its desire to assist financially, and to cooperate in matters regarding enhancement of regional security and economic improvements. The United States and Kazakhstan together plan to strengthen their relationship into a partnership through educate one another concerning national, regional, worldwide matters. Kazakhstan has shown great interest in the matters evolving around Iraq and Afghanistan. They are committed and determined to partner with the United States in the strengthening these countries. Kazakhstan has already committed over 800 of its military personnel to the cause and is prepared to enter strategic relationships with Middle Eastern countries to obtain peace for the region. There are many challenges that Kazakhstan faces regarding national security ranging â€Å"from terrorism to a significant narcotics problem, which is always accompanied with a lot of criminal activity and other threats to security.†( Abizaid 1) For this reason, Kazakhstan is working extensively with the United States to strengthen is defense capabilities on the Caspian Sea. They have vowed to strengthen and broaden their military capabilities in the fight against terrorism, drug trafficking, illegal proliferation of weapons, etc. The United States defense officials have been speaking with Kazakhstan officials on ways to strengthen military ties between the U.S. and Kazakhstan. This is an important and strategic move for Kazakhstan leaders, they are a relatively new country and it is important to strengthen their defense capabilities to secure their future endeavors. They are placing security forces along the Caspian Sea Region as this region poses the biggest threat to the country. Their goal is to provide an organized, professional military force. Kazakhstan is also working very closely with the United States to expand their military presence in neighboring Afghanistan in an effort to strengthen its country. â€Å"That’s why it is utterly indispensable to set up a system in which each and every ministry and department would organize its work in such a way that each day, month and year could bring us ever nearer to the objectives we’ve set.† (Prosperity). Kazakhstan has admitted that they could use advice and analyze the tendencies from other countries in their effort to rebuild and reform Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan has publicly made commitments to provide assistance to Afghanistan in their fight to counter narcotics. The Central Asian country has been building strong strategic relationships with its neighboring countries and other countries in the international community that share the same views. For example they have extended a promise to assist in the reconstruction of Afghanistan and Iraq. â€Å"We shall advance to strengthening of our relationships with Russia, China, Central Asian neighbors, Islamic states and Western countries.† (Prosperity) This relationship building efforts made by Kazakhstan represents their commitment to enhance regional security and economic integration by forming strategic partnerships within Central Asia. Kazakhstan has created strategic partnerships with countries like China, Kazakhstan understands that it is important to keep relations with these countries because they all still share common goals of sustainability, economic growth, and international terrorism. Kazakhstan has identified a system where strategic planning, strategic control, accountability and responsibility are its major objectives. Kazakhstan need for a government who views the world according to 21st century realities and who doesn’t apply 20th century problem-solving methods to 21st century problems will become evident as the country incorporates its long term goals. Macbet Speech Essay Good morning fellow year 10s, as you may know my name is Andre and I’m up here to discuss the techniques William Shakespeare has used to expressed the theme of ambition and good vs. evil in Macbeth, Shakespeare expressed these themes using various techniques such as imagery, symbolism, hyperbole and personification. The theme of ambition is one of the major themes within the story and it shows the destruction ambition can cause.When Shakespeare first introduces us to Macbeth, who in my opinion is the most ambitious character in the story and who’s also husband of Lady Macbeth, thane of glamis and a brave warrior is our first impression when we read of his courageous act in the battle. His fame on the battlefield wins him great honour from the King. Nevertheless he is a human whose private ambitions are made clear through his asides and soliloquies. His desire to become King and have power is driven by his ambition manipulative wife.Shakespeare stats Macbeths ambition in Act 1, Scene 5 through the letter Macbeth writes to Lady Macbeth. Shakespeare uses a positive tone to show Macbeth’s ambition. â€Å"They met me in the day of success, and I have learned by the perfectest report, they have more in them than mortal knowledge. When I burned in desire to question them further, they made themselves air, into which they vanished. † And in that quote he also uses a hyperbole â€Å"When I burnt in desire† this shows how much Macbeth wanted the title of the King.Ambition played a huge factor in both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s decision to kill King Duncan. â€Å"I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting Ambition, which oerleaps itself and falls on the other† Shakespeare uses personification to describe that vaulting ambition along with the manipulative ways of his wife is all that makes him to give in to the terrible act of murdering Duncan and that his intent is nothing but personal gain. The theme of Good vs. Evil is one of themes Shakespeare has used to put together this story.Shakespeare uses imagery and symbolism to express the theme of Good vs. Evil. He uses darkness to symbolize evil, such as, the witches in act 1 scene 1, where they first met, they are represented as evil because of the use of night, and night is linked with Darkness. Quote, â€Å"that will ere the set of sun†. Darkness also prepares us for the coming of evil deeds, for example Macbeths visit to the witches and the murder of King Duncan and Banquo. Darkness also helps create an image in your head while you’re reading about the murders.Blood symbolizes both Good and Evil and changes in meaning throughout the play. For example in Act 1, scene 2, â€Å"For brave Macbeth—well he deserves that name— Disdaining fortune, with his brandishd steel, which smoked with bloody execution, like valors minion carved out his passage till he faced the slave† in this case Shakespeare us es blood as a symbol of honour and loyalty. Then it turns around in Act 2, Scene 2 when Macbeth and Lady Macbeth murder King Duncan â€Å"As they had seen me with these hangmans hands. † Hangman’s hands meaning Bloody hands.Blood comes to symbolize their guilt they have, and they begin to feel that their crimes have marked them in a way that cannot be washed clean. â€Å"Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand? † which means he wants to wash off the guilt. Shakespeare uses water as a symbol of good because water represents purity. In conclusion, William Shakespeare has smartly used various techniques to express the major themes of Ambition and Good vs. Evil. Or maybe you haven’t taken the SAT or ACT yet but are wondering how important the tests really are. One way you can make the most of your score is by finding guaranteed SAT scholarships or guaranteed ACT scholarships. Scholarships for ACT Scores and Scholarships for SAT Scores This post focuses on scholarships offered by colleges and universities themselves. Why? Many private scholarships, while lucrative, feature full, college-admission-like applications, including letters of recommendation and essays. Lots of other smaller scholarships are based on essays, personal circumstances, or even your parent's employer. While we are not discouraging you from applying to these, this post will focus on scholarships any student can earn automatically from universities just based on their test scores and GPA or class rank. We will highlight some of the most searched-for universities and best opportunities, but this is not a comprehensive list. We will also show you how to look up this information for any college you’re interested in. Automatic Scholarships for National Merit Before we get into the scholarship list, we'll also highlight another source of money based mainly on test scores: National Merit. As we have covered in past posts, the National Merit competition recognizes the top PSAT (Practice SAT) scorers in each state. While there is a $2,500 scholarship you can earn through the competition itself, you can also get big scholarships from colleges by listing them as your first choice through National Merit. You can get anything from a small scholarship to a full ride, depending on the school. As a rough rule of thumb, public universities are more likely to give more money for National Merit, though there are exceptions. For example, you can get a full ride scholarship at the University of Idaho and the University of Oklahoma. At Loyola University, a private college, you can get $2,000 for being a National Merit finalist.However, at Baylor, another private college, you can get more than $40,000, if you're a National Merit Finalist and select Baylor as your first-choice college. Automatic Scholarships Based on SAT/ACT Scores Now we will highlight colleges that give automatic scholarships based on SAT/ACT scores, as well as qualifiers like GPA or class rank. For these scholarships, you don’t have to submit any extra application information, but in some cases, you have to apply by a certain deadline to be guaranteed the scholarship. Scholarship Amount Awarded per Year President’s Gold Scholarship $19,000-22,000 Provost’s Gold Scholarship $16,000-18,000 Dean’s Gold Scholarship $13,000-15,000 Founder's Gold Scholarship $7,000-12,000 Baylor does not have set cut-offs for these award tiers but bases the awards on SAT/ACT score and class rank. They do have a scholarship estimator you can use to predict your award amount. As an example, based on the estimator, a 36 ACT with a high class rank (5/500) gets you a President’s Gold scholarship of $22,000/year. A 34 with the same rank also gets you $22,000, a 32 gets you $20,000, and a 28 gets you $16,000. While these are all high amounts, note that increasing your ACT from 28 to 32 gets you $4,000 more dollars each year- $16,000 over your whole college career. Or, to take another example, if your class rank is 250/500 and you have a 24 ACT, you don’t qualify for a scholarship. But if you have that same rank but a 27 ACT, you can get a Founder’s Gold Scholarship of $10,000 per year. In other words, a 3-point ACT increase, which is definitely possible with some smart studying, can earn you $40,000. That’s amazing! Clemson University Scholarship Minimum SAT or ACT Score Class Rank Requirement Amount Awarded per Year Trustee Scholarship (for in-state residents) SAT: 1270 ACT: 27 Top 10% $1000 Trustee Scholarship (for out-of-state residents) SAT: 1360 ACT: 29 Top 10% $7500 At Clemson, South Carolina residents will receive the Trustee Scholarship of $1,000 if they are ranked in the top 10% of their high school class and also have at least a 1270 SAT (Math + Critical Reading) or 27 ACT. Non-residents with at least a 1360 SAT or 29 ACT and ranked in the top 10% of their class will receive a renewable scholarship of at least $7,500. The scholarship page notes â€Å"Students with higher test scores will be considered for these merit scholarships up to $15,000 annually.† So although they don’t have hard numbers, you can double your scholarship if you have higher scores. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University FAMU offers a Distinguished Scholars program that covers the cost of tuition for both in-state and out-of-state students with at least a 1350 on the new SAT (with a math score of at least 650) or 30 on the ACT (with a math score of at least 30) and a FAMU recalculated GPA of at least 4.0. If you don’t reach the cut off for the Distinguished Scholarship, you can still earn the George W. Gore Assistantship Scholarship or the Presidential Special Scholarship.The amount of the award changes based on your GPA and test scores: Scholarship Minimum SAT or ACT Score Minimum Math Score FAMU GPA Amount Awarded per Year George W. They don't publish eligibility information, but you could earn anywhere from a $500 one-time scholarship to a $3,000 renewable scholarships. You have to apply by March 1st to be considered for these awards. Louisiana State University LSU has three scholarships based on GPA and test scores you are considered for automatically. Scholarships With Score Cut-Offs Although many universities don’t have automatic scholarships based on test scores, GPA, or class rank, many use these factors as cut-offs for scholarship consideration. So even though in these cases high scores don’t guarantee you scholarships, they are an important factor in being considered. Just like when you were a kid and couldn't get onto the roller coasters at the theme park, you won't even be considered for some scholarships without high enough SAT/ACT scores. For example, you’ll be considered for a full ride at Auburn University if you have at least a 33 ACT or 1450 SAT and a 3.5 GPA if you are an Alabama resident. If you’re a non-resident, you will be considered for an $18,000 a year scholarship if you have at least a 33 ACTor 1450 SAT and at least a 3.5 GPA. If that’s out of your range, you could be considered for a $4,000 a year scholarship at Auburn if you have at least a 28 ACT or1300 SAT, a GPA of at least 3.5, and are an Alabama resident (They have other scholarships for non-residents, too). Texas AM has scholarship eligibility requirements as well. Under their eligibility section, they note, â€Å"To be considered for the scholarships listed,students must achieve a minimum1360 New SAT composite score (evidence-based reading and writing score of at least 660 + math scores of at least 620), or 30 ACT composite (English + Math, with scores of at least 27).† So are these scholarships guaranteed even if you meet these minimum scores? No. But you won’t be considered for them at all unless your ACT or SAT score is above a certain level. Many other colleges have GPA and score cut-offs for scholarship consideration, so the higher you can get your scores, the more likely you are to earn merit scholarships. How To Look Up Automatic Scholarships The examples of scholarships above are just that- examples! It isn’t by any means a full list of every university in the country where you can get automatic money for your ACT or SAT score. So how do you find that information? Search for merit scholarships. The majority of scholarships given for test scores and GPA are merit scholarships- in other words, they are given based on your achievements, unlike need-based scholarships, which are based on your demonstrated financial need. Make sure to look for pages titled â€Å"Merit-Based† or â€Å"Academic-Based† scholarships. Many colleges and universities have separate pages for merit scholarships that a simple search will pull up. If you do not see one, try searching â€Å"[College/University Name] Scholarships† or â€Å"[College/University Name] Financial Aid.† If you start at the university’s financial aid section, you can find information on scholarships (both merit and need-based) from there. If you can’t find the information online, try contacting either the financial aid or undergraduate admissions offices. Keep the following guidelines in mind as you search: Make sure the scholarships you find are specifically designated for â€Å"Entering Freshmen.† These are the scholarships that will apply to you as a high school student applying to college. See if the college makes a designation between in-state and out-of-state applicants. In some cases, state universities will give bigger scholarships to non-resident applicants since out-of-state tuition is higher. Sometimes there are also differences in requirements and cut-off scores. Check if there are separate application requirements or deadlines. Scholarship money is limited, so in general, the earlier you can apply, the better. Use the steps below to look up whether there are automatic scholarships at any of the colleges you are interested in. A short term disaster may change consumer behaviour temporarily but in the long term if the supply remains short constantly the following might happen; People might start adopting to the shortage by using more fuel efficient cars, using CNG,solar power or even nuclear power.
